As you consider hiring a caregiver, you may be fearful about letting a stranger into your loved ones’ home – how can you be sure they won’t steal or take advantage of their position?
Not to worry – you can protect your family members’ belongings and assets with a bit of smart preparation.
- Remove valuables – If your loved one doesn’t mind, remove the possibility of theft by simply relocating any valuables to your home or a secure location.
- Lock down valuables – If the items need to stay in the home, put them in a safe or behind a lock.
- Inventory valuables – If that’s not possible, keep a list and photograph items for insurance purposes.
- Keep all cash, checks, credit cards and debit cards secure – Make sure your loved one keeps these important items locked and knows not to provide access to anyone other than designated people. Set up direct deposit when possible and never endorse checks ahead of time.
- Monitor bank statements – As a double check, keep an eye on accounts. If you review on a regular basis, you can catch any unusual transactions early and take action.
- Track incoming mail – Depending on your loved one’s situation, you may want to have mail sent to a P.O. box or to your address so you can be sure sensitive information is secure.
