As humans, we thrive on social interaction. Family, friends, and colleagues provide us with companionship, emotional support, and intellectual stimulation. As we age, however, our levels of social interaction tend to decrease. Family members move away, spouses and friends pass on, and many seniors find themselves living in an increasingly isolated landscape.

This gradual withdrawal from social life has been linked to an increased risk for health problems among seniors—including depression, hypertension, heart disease, and reduced mental acuity. A recent study by the National Institute on Aging concluded that loneliness and social isolation can increase levels of cortisol, which can hinder immune response and promote inflammation.

Adding to the problem, shelter-in-place and social distancing orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic have increased levels of social isolation globally, and have placed many independently living seniors in a “contact drought” where face-to-face interaction with others is minimal.

So how can we combat feelings of loneliness and isolation for seniors who are struggling in these uncertain times? Here are a few ideas…

Cultivate Social Relationships: Beginning new friendships late in life isn’t always easy, but many seniors are able to increase their social participation by joining a club, volunteering outside the home, or taking a part-time job.

Make Connections Online: The Information Age has offered us many convenient ways to stay connected without face-to-face contact. Apps like Zoom and Facetime allow seniors to stay connected with friends and loved ones, whether they’re across the nation or down the street. The Institute on Aging even offers a Friendship Line, a 24-hour toll-free hotline that allows homebound or disabled seniors to connect with others by phone.

Adopt a Pet: House pets have been shown to provide invaluable comfort, contact, and unconditional love that help us stay emotionally buoyant when we are isolated. And simple interactions like petting a cat or dog can help boost mood, ease stress, and even lower blood pressure.

Work with an In-Home Caregiver: Regular visits from an in-home care provider can have many beneficial effects for seniors.
– Companionship gives seniors an opportunity for social interaction. By sharing their feelings, and concerns with a compassionate listener, seniors can feel heard, understood, and connected.
– Emotional support provided by an in-home caregiver can provide seniors with invaluable nurturing and encouragement—as well as assistance in performing daily self-care tasks such as shopping, cooking, and dressing.
– Spiritual life is essential to many seniors. An in-home caregiver can help transport seniors to worship services, read spiritual texts aloud with seniors at home, or offer opportunities for home prayer and mediation.

Some home care providers are considered better at their job than others. There are many different skills that a home care provider will need if they are going to treat the patient the way they want to be treated. Providing the actual care is only a part of the equation. Providers will also need to use the right tone and talk to the patient in a way that makes them feel comfortable if both parties are going to get along. If a person is interested in signing up for at-home care, they might be wondering what they should be looking for in a home care provider.

Making the Patient Feel Heard

A good home care provider will know how to make the patient feel heard. Patients tend to have a lot of questions and concerns when being cared for by a stranger, especially if they don’t have a loved one nearby to help them feel more comfortable. While the home care provider might not have time to tell the patient exactly what they are doing, or they might not have time to respond to all of the patient’s questions and comments, but the home care provider can still make the patient feel like they are being listened to. This helps the patient feel more relaxed and in control.

Keeping the Patient Informed

If anything changes during the treatment process, the home care provider will need to keep the patient informed as to what has changed and how the treatment will proceed going forward. If the patient is not mentally equipped to deal with the situation, the home care provider can speak to a loved one that is responsible for keeping up with the patient’s treatment plan. Things can change quickly when a patient is of a certain age or dealing with a potentially fatal condition or disease, so it’s important to keep the patient up-to-date as much as possible without interrupting the treatment.

Having a Soothing Presence

The patient will also appreciate being cared for by a home care provider that has a soothing presence. They might use a soft, calming voice to make the patient feel more at ease during the situation. This can really come in handy if the patient is suffering from a lot of pain or if the home care provider needs to inform the patient of a new diagnosis, which can be quite scary and intimidating.

Those looking for a company that provides companion care in Philadelphia may find the information listed above helpful. They can try reaching out to different home care providers for more information.
