Although you can buy a pre-packaged first aid kit at most drug stores, it’s important to inventory the kit to make sure it contains what you need for your senior loved one and his/her specific medical needs.

First, let’s cover the basics of any first aid kit. The Mayo Clinic provides an excellent list of first aid essentials. We’ve summarized below. When you shop for a kit, you may want to compare its contents with this list.

Adhesive bandages and a roll of adhesive tape

Sterile gauze pads and a roll

Eye shield or pad

Aluminum finger splint

Instant hot/cold packs

Cotton balls and swabs

Non-latex gloves

Petroleum jelly

Safety pins

Scissors and tweezers

Thermometer

Turkey baster

Breathing barrier for CPR

Medicine cup for correct dosage

Hand sanitizer

Antibiotic ointment

Antiseptic solution

Eye wash solution

Calamine lotion

Hydrocortisone cream

Second, make sure your kit contains medications, but confirm there are no interactions with these over-the-counter drugs for your loved ones.

Aspirin

Acetaminophen

Ibuprofen

Antihistamine

Decongestants

Anti-nausea

Anti-diarrhea

Antacid

Laxative

Finally, talk to your elderly loved ones’ doctor to find out if there are any items that are important for them, based on previous accidents or higher risk due to medical diagnoses.

If you are a caregiver, make sure you know how to use the first aid kit by getting certified. Are accidents a concern? 5 Star Home Caregivers are all First Aid and CPR certified. They are trained to handle senior emergencies. Contact us to learn more.

If you are acaregiver, chances are your loved one takes a variety of medications both prescription and over-the-counter. Have you taken a good look at their medicine cabinet lately? These four steps are critical to keeping them healthy and safe.

Confirm all current medications

Make sure you know exactly what prescriptions they have and from which doctor (primary or specialist). If they also take over-the-counter vitamins and supplements, ask your local pharmacist about any drug interactions. Once you’ve confirmed they are okay, write them all down with the daily dosage, and keep a copy for your loved one, yourself and any other caregivers.

Use a pillbox

To ensure your loved one is taking all of their medications at the right time, purchase a pillbox with clearly visible compartments and help them fill it each week. There are even new products that vibrate or sound an alarm when it’s time to take the pill. Depending on the needs of the senior, you can also have locked compartments that only open when it’s time for that particular pill.

Discard unused, expired medications safely

Almost every household has expired medications that accumulate over time. It’s important to dispose of these safely. You can visit your local pharmacist for information on Prescription Drug Take Back events in your area. Make sure you peel off any identifying information. For over-the-counter products, you can dispose in regular trash.

Replace and replenish essential medications

Once you’ve removed any expired medications, make an inventory list. Re-stock the medicine cabinet and then tape the list inside of the door. Mark your calendar and check the contents on a regular basis to remove expired products and replenish as needed. The inventory list below is just an example. Your loved one may need more or less, depending on their health and any drug interactions.

Aspirin

Acetaminophen

Ibuprofen

Decongestants

Cough medicine or drops

Antihistamines

Eye drops

Calcium carbonate tablets

Stool softener

Antihistamine cream

Benzoyl peroxide

Antifungal cream

Bandages and gauze pads

Medical tape

Antibiotic ointment

Thermometer

Magnifying glass and tweezers

Rub-on painkiller
